Is Purple Tea Bitter?

No, purple tea is not usually considered a bitter tea. In fact, one of the things many people notice when they try it for the first time is how smooth and approachable it tastes. Compared to green tea, it often feels less grassy and less sharp. Compared to black tea, it's usually much lighter and less astringent.

That softer flavor is largely due to how purple tea is processed. Most purple teas are only lightly oxidized, which helps preserve their fresh character while avoiding some of the stronger, more tannic qualities found in fully oxidized black teas. The result is a clean, mild cup that many people find easy to drink on its own.

Some drinkers describe purple tea as having subtle floral notes, while others notice a faint berry-like quality in the background. These flavors are generally delicate rather than intense, which contributes to the tea's smooth overall character.

Like any tea, though, brewing makes a difference. Even a naturally mild tea can become unpleasant if it's prepared incorrectly. Water that's too hot or a steeping time that's too long can pull out more tannins and make the tea taste harsher than it should.

A good starting point is water around 85–90°C (185–195°F) and a steeping time of about 3–4 minutes. This tends to bring out the tea's natural sweetness and smoothness while keeping bitterness to a minimum. If you prefer a stronger cup, it's usually better to add a few more leaves rather than dramatically increasing the steeping time.

One reason purple tea appeals to many people is that it doesn't require much adjustment. Some teas need honey, sugar, milk, or lemon to balance their flavor. Purple tea is often enjoyed completely plain because its natural taste is already quite gentle.

Of course, taste is subjective. Someone who is very sensitive to bitterness may still notice a slight edge if the tea is brewed strongly. But compared to many green teas and black teas, purple tea is generally considered one of the smoother and less bitter options available.

So for most people, purple tea is not bitter at all. It's usually described as mild, smooth, refreshing, and easy to sip, which is one reason it has become popular with people who find traditional teas a little too harsh.
