Does Purple Tea Cause Jitters Like Coffee?

Purple tea is generally much less likely to cause jitters compared to coffee. One of the main reasons is simply the caffeine amount. A typical cup of purple tea usually contains around 30–40 mg of caffeine, while coffee often contains 90–100 mg or more per cup. That’s a pretty noticeable difference.

Because the caffeine level is lower, the energy from purple tea tends to feel softer and more gradual rather than intense and immediate. A lot of people who feel shaky, anxious, restless, or overstimulated after coffee find tea much easier to tolerate overall.

Another important factor is L-theanine, an amino acid naturally found in tea plants. Purple tea contains L-theanine just like green tea does. L-theanine works alongside caffeine and is often associated with a calmer type of alertness. Instead of feeling wired, many people describe the experience as more balanced and mentally clear.

That combination is one reason tea-based caffeine often feels very different from coffee caffeine, even when both contain caffeine technically. Coffee can sometimes create a fast spike in energy followed by nervousness or a crash later. Purple tea tends to feel steadier and more controlled for many people.

Of course, sensitivity still varies from person to person. Someone extremely sensitive to caffeine could still react to purple tea, especially if they drink several cups or brew it very strongly. But overall, it’s usually considered a much gentler option.

The way the tea is prepared matters too. Longer steeping times and hotter water will extract more caffeine, while cold brewing often creates an even softer effect because the extraction happens more slowly.

Many people also find purple tea easier to drink throughout the day because it feels lighter on the body. You still get some alertness and focus, but without feeling overstimulated or “amped up.”

In everyday life, that calmer energy is actually one of the biggest reasons people switch from coffee to teas like purple tea. They want something energizing, but not something that makes them feel tense or uncomfortable afterward.

So while purple tea still contains caffeine and can absolutely help with energy and focus, it’s generally far less likely to cause the jitters commonly associated with strong coffee.
